An Advertising Experiment in Art
The poster was number 5 in the Konstnärliga affischer series, a bold attempt begun in 1895 to turn Swedish advertising into art. Its initiator, Carl G. Laurin, had drawn inspiration from Paris and engaged established artists, including Carl Westman. Despite the attention, the venture folded after only a few years – the posters were too costly for many clients.
