In the 17th century, the flower still life genre got its start and reflected the great interest in botany at the time. Bosschaert was one of the pioneers and created compositions of ideal bouquets for the princes' cabinet of curiosities, where plants from different seasons were gathered.
In a terracotta vase, he created illusionistic depictions of flowers, from cultivated rarities to meadow flowers. The insects in the paintings often symbolized the transience of life. The reappearance of certain plants in several paintings suggests that the artist probably used sketches or engravings as a basis.
