From Monet to Cassatt
The painting was shown at the Impressionists’ second group exhibition in Paris in 1876, four years after Monet painted it. Around 1889, it came into the possession of Mary Cassatt, the American artist who herself became a central figure in Impressionist circles – an early example of how the artists also collected one another’s work.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Springtime by Claude Monet from 1872. The motif is of a lovely spring day where a young woman sits in the grass and reads.

During the early 1870s, Monet often depicted views of his garden that included his wife Camille and their son Jean. But when this painting was exhibited at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1876, it was more commonly called "Woman Reading."

Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris and was, along with Auguste Renoir, one of the main pioneers of Impressionism. Monet's work Impression. Sunrise from 1872 gave the name to the movement.
