A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Södermanland from the 19th century.
The coat of arms depicts a black grip against a golden background. The gripen, which is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, symbolizes strength and vigilance, and is a recurring heraldic motif in Swedish history.
Södermanland, often called Sörmland, is located in the south-eastern part of Sweden and borders the Baltic Sea, which has historically made the region important for trade and shipping.
Stockholm County consists of parts of the Uppland and Södermanland provinces. The largest cities in Södermanland include Eskilstuna, Nyköping, and Katrineholm, where Nyköping also serves as the administrative center. Södermanland is known for its rich history that includes many castles and manors that bear witness to the region's importance in the Middle Ages and beyond. Today, the landscape is also known for its industry, especially in manufacturing and technology.
The text above the coat of arms reads: "Coat of Södermanland". At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
