A Scream from Outside
It is not necessarily the person who is screaming. In Munch’s own account of the experience behind the motif, it was instead an “infinite scream” passing through nature. When he made a lithograph in 1895, he included the phrase in the print – a clue that the horror comes from outside.

The story behind the motif
