The Winter Before the Disaster
Less than two years after this photograph was taken, Sigrid struck a mine in Kiel Bay, on 1 November 1941. The ship was en route from Luleå to Emden carrying ore when eleven of the sixteen people on board were killed – one of the many wartime losses suffered by the Swedish merchant fleet.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a picture of the cargo ship Sigrid av Landskrona, which is frozen in Stockholm's southern archipelago. The ship's engines run and the propeller spins to keep ice free around the hull. The picture was taken in February 1940.
