A Greeting as Advertising Space
James C. Boyle’s 1896 patent was not merely intended to perform the greeting hands-free. He also proposed a sign on the headwear: the unexpected movement would make passers-by notice the advertisement. An automatic hat lift was thus conceived as an early moving advertising space.

The story behind the motif
Posts with one old patent drawing of a "Saluting Device" created by J.C. Boyle and patented on March 10, 1896.
The drawing shows a mechanical device integrated into a hat or helmet that can raise and lower part of the brim, probably to simulate or automate a salute, such as tipping the hat.
Frame not included.
