The suffrage game

Women's suffrage had been brought up in Sweden's Riksdag several times around the turn of the century but voted down. In 1909, universal male suffrage was introduced, which meant that the only people who were not allowed to vote, apart from women, were men who were in mental hospitals or in prison. All over Europe, the Nordic countries and England, women actively demonstrated for equal conditions .

This design is called The Suffrage Game and is a fantastic and powerful illustration showing the journey and progress of the women's movement in the early 20th century. The suffrage game represents a dice game and was distributed as a postcard in 1910 to promote women's equality and suffrage.

It was the Association for Women's Political Suffrage (FKPR) and the National Association for Women's Political Suffrage (LKPR) that were behind the suffrage game. In the picture we see portraits of Carrie Chapman Catt, Ann Margret Holmgren, Karl Staaf, Signe Bergman and Carl Lindhagen, as well as views from cities and places where issues surrounding women's suffrage have been relevant.

Sweden introduced women's suffrage in 1919, 9 years after this motif was printed and later than Finland (1906), Norway (1913) and Denmark (1915).
