The story behind the motif
Poster with a classic plant illustration from the renowned artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840). Redouté was a Belgian botanist and artist known for his stunning illustrations of roses, lilies and other flowers. Redouté was nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers" and has been called the foremost botanical illustrator in history .
Redouté was official court artist to Marie Antoinette and managed to continue with his art through the French Revolution where, after the turbulent political times, he began to be recognized internationally for his realistic illustrations.
Over the years produced Redouté illustrated over 1,800 different species and even today his works are relevant and popular around the world.
