During the 16th century, Rome was foremost in the world in art and was seen as an artistic center. During this time, Pope Julius II decided that the old St. Peter's Basilica would be replaced with a grand new church. It was the start of the new St. Peter's Church .
Pope Julius II also exhibited a couple of ancient sculptures for the public to see, which was the beginning of the Vatican Museums . It was also at this time that Michelangelo painted the famous painting The Creation on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which is the Pope's private chapel in the Vatican.
