Before the Plan Was Revealed
When Anders Beer Wilse took the portrait on 3 June 1910, Amundsen’s official plan was still an expedition towards the Arctic Ocean. Only after departure did he tell the crew in Madeira that their actual course would be towards the South Pole. The photograph thus captures him in the midst of one of polar history’s best-kept secrets.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph taken in 1910 by the photographer Anders Beer Wilse. This is a portrait of Roald Amundsen dressed in a dark double-breasted coat and uniform-like cap, which reinforces the impression of him as a captain and polar explorer.

The photograph was taken in connection with the expedition with the polar ship Forward, before his famous journey to the South Pole in 1910–1912. The portrait is formal and serene, focusing on his concentrated and determined expression.
