The story behind the motif
The cover of the Philadelphia Sunday Press from May 26, 1895, was designed by the American artist George Reiter Brill. The lithograph unites newspaper graphics and illustration in a clearly defined, poster-like composition, where the large red newspaper headline is given prominence above an elegant company dressed in period attire.
To the left sits a woman in a dark green coat and a hat adorned with feathers, while a standing figure holding a tennis racket cuts vertically across the picture plane. Beside them, the newspaper’s contents are presented in a narrow blue text column. The warm yellow background, the red borders, and the deep dark tones give the print an unusually vivid character. The result is both a document of Philadelphia’s newspaper world around the turn of the century and a graphically precise illustration with a strong presence on the wall.
