The story behind the motif
Two light summer dresses stand side by side in the poster PALLANZA – Pour les derniers jours from the fashion magazine Très Parisien, published in 1923. The model on the left is made in Toilline with the pattern Les grappes de raisin, while the one on the right wears Les prés fleuris; both fabrics are stated to be from Rodier. The figures and the garments carry the entire image, in an airy arrangement where the graphic patterns are given ample space.
Très Parisien was published from 1920–1936 and brought together illustrated fashion plates from the haute couture of its time. The Rijksmuseum catalogs this particular plate as anonymous. The slender silhouettes, the decorative textiles, and the two vertical figures give the motif a distinctly 1920s character. At the same time, the pared-back composition makes the illustrated dresses feel just as striking on the wall today.
