Four Decades of the Deep
The illustration was part of Carl Chun’s account of the Valdivia expedition, Germany’s first major deep-sea expedition. In 1898, the steamship left Hamburg; the material became so extensive that the results were published in 24 volumes over roughly four decades. The image is therefore part of a research project that continued long after the expedition had returned home.

The oldest discovered octopus fossils date back to 500 million years ago, originating from the latter portion of the Cambrian period.
