The story behind the motif
Ocke, Nutta and Pillerill is a children's book and rhyming tale by Elsa Beskow from 1939.
The book is about the two acorn children Ocke and Pillerill who one day suddenly blow away on a leaf. Their friend, the hazel girl Nutta, sets off together with the kind squirrel to look for her missing friends. On the adventure we encounter elves and goblins, as well as other funny characters such as a teasing magpie and two resourceful chestnut boys.
In this illustration we see Ocke and Pillerill pulling a large cart filled with bundles of beard licorice that the trolls have packed up for delivery to their friends and customers. On notes we see, among other things, that a bundle of beard moss is to be delivered to the Ene troll. In the background we find many small spectators. Four elves are sitting on a branch above, a hare peeking out from behind a tree, an old woman peeking out from a stump and a small bird on a branch.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
