The story behind the motif
Ocke, Nutta and Pillerill is a children's book and rhyming tale by Elsa Beskow from 1939.
The book is about the two acorn children Ocke and Pillerill who one day suddenly blow away on a leaf. Their friend, the hazel girl Nutta, sets off together with the kind squirrel to look for their missing friends. On the adventure we encounter elves and trolls, as well as other funny characters such as a teasing magpie and two resourceful chestnut boys.
In this illustration we see the squirrel family moving their things. The first squirrel has a large wooden box on its back, and the mother squirrel has a large cloth sack with her. On a branch a little further up we see four children looking down at what is happening.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her children's storybooks that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
