A Memorial Committee’s Gift
The painting came to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1915 through a memorial committee formed in the artist’s honour. Edward Robert Hughes had been dead for a year. The museum acquisition was therefore part of an organised commemoration of him, rather than a purchase made while he was still active.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the fantastic painting Night with her Train of Stars from 1912. The painting was made by Edward Robert Hughes who was a British painter. Hughes mainly created watercolors, but also some oil paintings.

The painting's title is derived from W. E Henley's poem: "Margaritae Sorori". The poem begins with the text:
"A late lark twitters from the quiet skies:
And from the west,
Where the sun, his day's work ended,
Lingers as in content,

There falls on the old, gray city
An influence luminous and serene,
A shining peace."

Artist: Edward Robert Hughes | Created: 1912.
