In the summer of 1893, in Åsgårdstrand, Munch painted this composition alongside Summer Night. The Voice, a work with a related theme. He did not abandon the idea: three years later, he reworked it as a colour woodcut and returned to it once more in 1901.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch from 1895.

The painting depicts a scene by the water where the moon is reflected on the surface of the sea. The trees on the side frame the landscape and Munch uses strong colors of pink and blue.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was a Norwegian artist and one of the most influential figures in modern art. He is best known for his dramatic paintings that reflect anxiety, death, loneliness, and human existence. His work had a profound impact on both Symbolism and Expressionism, and his works continue to be both beloved and debated around the world.
