The story behind the motif
In *The Roadstead of Lisbon* from 1843, Carl Dahl depicts the roadstead outside Lisbon with two tall sailing ships on a rippling sea. The bright sails catch the wind, while flags, rigging, and small wave crests are rendered with the precision that characterizes his maritime painting. The open horizon and the shifting sky lend the scene both movement and spaciousness.
Dahl was a Danish painter who specialized in marines and studied under C.W. Eckersberg. His interest in the construction of ships is evident in the carefully drawn masts and rigging, yet the image does not stop at documentation: blue water, white sails, and the great cloud cover create a clear and well-balanced composition. A seascape with the 19th century’s eye for detail and weather.
