The story behind the motif

Emanuel Larsen’s marine painting from 1856 depicts the ship of the line Valdemar as it beats through the Øresund in a fresh topsail gale. The large sailing vessel rides high in the waves, with its sails taut in the wind and smaller craft following farther off across the water. The low horizon gives the sky and the restless sea ample space.

Larsen was a Danish marine painter and studied, among others, under C.W. Eckersberg at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His paintings reveal a careful eye for ships’ construction and rigging, but also a distinct sense of weather, गति, and light. Here, the drama is built through the bright sails set against the blue-grey sky and the darker water – a classic seascape with steady movement throughout the composition.

Artist: Emanuel Larsen (1823–1859) | Created: 1856.
