The story behind the motif

At the beginning of the 20th century, the "modern fashion" came where the fashion houses in Europe had fashion shows and launched several collections per year. In the 1910s, women wore long dresses with high collars and a defined waist. Under the dress, a tightly laced corset was worn to get as narrow a waist as possible. This came with several health risks. Women punctured both lungs and had cosmetic surgery to remove ribs in order to tighten the corset as tight as possible. Two years after this advertising poster was published, the first brassiere, i.e. the bra, arrived (1914). Wealthy women also spent a lot of money on big and fancy hats which were a status symbol during this time period. The bigger and more ornate the better.
