Hand-Coloured, 1914
The plate was printed as a lithograph but given its colours with pochoir: stencils coloured by hand with watercolour. It was published as plate 80 in the August 1914 issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton, the same month that Germany declared war on France and Britain entered the First World War.

The story behind the motif

Doeuillet was one of France's foremost and most influential fashion houses along with Cheruit, Doucet, Lanvin, Paquin, Poiret, Redfern and Worth. Doeuillet is famous for creating the first ever cocktail dress, which took the world by storm. As a designer, he was known for his refined and elegant style.

The illustrator of this beautiful fashion image was called George Barbier. He was a very prominent artist from France celebrated not least by Vouge for his contribution to the world of fashion during the early 20th century.
