The summer that returned
Kyrkesund was Karl Nordström’s recurring summer landscape, not a one-off visit. For many years, he and his family rented a garden house on Härön by Tjörn, and the painting was made in 1911—the same year Nordström joined the committee that began planning Liljevalchs art gallery in Stockholm.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Kyrkesund from 1911 by Karl Nordström. Nordström was a famous landscape painter and chairman of the Artists' Union.

Nordström grew up in Tjörn on the West Coast and at the age of 20 he moved to Stockholm to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After his time in Stockholm, he moved to France where he was influenced by Impressionism.

Nordström was part of the Opponents and also the Artists' Union, which was for modernizing Sweden's artist education, exhibitions and support for artists.

After some time abroad, he moved back to Tjörn where he lived until his death in 1923.
