Not a Solitary Photograph
The photograph is not an isolated postcard moment. Värmlands Museum’s catalogue describes it as part of a series from the late 1930s depicting Karlstad’s then swimming stadium, documenting the facility, swimmers and spectators alike. The image is therefore one frame from a larger visual report on bathing life shortly before the facility’s final years.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old photograph from Karlstad's Swimming Stadium. The former facility was located adjacent to the eastern side of the islet, south of Kanikenäset. The bath was inaugurated in 1923 but was then taken out of use and demolished in 1943 due to poor water quality. A similar construction, which replaced the one in the picture, was built in Örsholmstjärnet in the early 1950s.
