The coat of arms consists of a moose attacked by an eagle and a fox. The moose stands in the center, with the eagle on its back and the fox at its front legs. This symbolizes Jämtland's wild nature and wildlife.
The text above the coat of arms reads: Arms of Jemtland. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
Jämtland is a landscape in northern Sweden that is known for its unique history, beautiful nature and rich culture. In Jämtland are Åre, Östersund and Krokom, among others.
Jämtland was once an independent peasant republic with its own governance, which was unusual for its time. During the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, the Jämtas had great freedom and held annual meetings (Jamtamot), where they made joint decisions for the landscape.
One of Jämtland's most famous legends is the story of the Storsjöodjuret, a sea monster said to live in the Storsjön. Several "sightings" of the beast have been reported over the years, which has made the beast a part of Jämtland's folklore and tourist culture.
Part of Jämtland lies within the Sami area, and Sami culture and reindeer husbandry are still alive in the landscape. There are several Sami villages in the area, and reindeer husbandry is an important part of the Jämtland economy and culture.
