The Herring’s Uncertain Decade
In 1950, Icelandic researchers mapped herring spawning grounds along the south and south-west coasts, while herring fishing remained a major engine of the country’s economy. Less than two decades later, the large herring stocks around Iceland had collapsed – and catches fell dramatically.
