A track built as relief work
When this picture was taken in 1930, the Nürburgring was only three years old. The track had been financed as a major public-works relief project and built in two years by as many as 2,500 workers. The original circuit measured 28.265 kilometres—considerably longer than today’s Nordschleife.

The story behind the motif
Grand Prix in Germany in 1936. In the picture we see the Swedish motorcycle driver Ragnar Ragge Sunnqvist (1908-1953) winning the race on the Avus track. With number 45 on his 500cc racing motorcycle, he is here ahead of the German Gall and wins on his Husqvarna.
