The story behind the motif

Record of a patent drawing dated October 8, 1872 for a "Flying Apparatus" designed by W.F. Quinby.

The drawing shows an early version of a glider. The detailed construction shows the bars, lines and attachment points that would stabilize and support the structure in flight. The shape of the wings is spread out and curved. The patent has several details on the technical aspects. The signatures of the witnesses and the inventor confirm the authentic patent status of the document.
