A Flora in Fascicles
Flora Universalis was not a single book but an image archive that took shape fascicle by fascicle in Jena from 1831. David Dietrich’s hand-coloured copper engravings were made as illustrated supplements to the major botanical works of the day – including those by Linnaeus, Willdenow and de Candolle.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration of David Nathaniel Friedrich Dietrich (1800-1888) who was an important figure in 19th century German botany.

In this illustration we see different types of vegetation, including both foliage and fruits to represent the biodiversity in the ecosystem.

Dietrich was born in Ziegenhain and, following the family tradition, devoted his life to botany. After completing his doctorate, he became curator of the herbarium of the University of Jena. During his lifetime, he wrote various treatises on the German flora, mosses, fungi and grasses, as well as several encyclopedias on botany.

David Dietrich published a dozen important botanical works over a period of more than thirty years, and is best known as the editor of the monumental and lavishly illustrated Flora Universalis. Flora Universalis, consisting of two volumes with over 300 plates, was published between 1831 and 1856.
