In 1940, the mountain terrain of northern Norway became a real theatre of war: German mountain troops made up the bulk of the ground forces around Narvik and fought there against Norwegian, British, French and Polish units. The date places the photograph in the midst of the dramatic upheaval in the Nordic region.
