Dalén’s Light in the Archipelago
In 1931, Libertas, one of the smaller Fjäderholmarna islands, received an AGA lighthouse powered by acetylene gas according to Gustaf Dalén’s technology. When the photograph was taken in 1940, the lighthouse had therefore been guiding vessels through the channel for only nine years. Dalén was already a Nobel Prize winner in physics, but his lighthouse system continued to shape the archipelago long afterwards.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Stockholm in the 1940s. In the picture we see a cross-country skater outside the Fjäderholmarnas lighthouse in the Stockholm archipelago.

Fjäderholmarna is part of the Royal National City Park. The Fjäderholmen consist of the four larger islets Stora Fjäderholmen, Ängsholmen, Libertas and Rövarn islets as well as a number of smaller skerries.
