The story behind the motif
Otto Bache’s large painting from 1878 depicts a group of horses outside Lindenborg Inn, just beyond Roskilde. In front of the low half-timbered building, the horses have come to a halt, while riders and people at the inn door gather in a scene filled with movement, glances, and everyday detail. The light-colored bodies of the horses catch the light against the darker yard and the trees beyond.
Bache was a Danish painter whose artistic practice was notably shaped by animal painting and history painting. The same year the work was completed, it was acquired by King Christian IX, and the painting remains one of Bache’s most widely circulated and well-known images. The broad composition, where the energy of the horses meets the still facade of the inn, gives the motif a distinct presence even on the wall today.
