The story behind the motif
A Swedish frigate with reefed topsails before the wind is a hand-coloured aquatint from 1805 by the Danish printmaker Niels Truslew, executed after a model by C.W. Eckersberg. The sheet forms part of Truslew’s series of vessels in various positions at sea, where each ship study gives wind, rigging, and movement a distinct character.
Here the sails are reefed, and the frigate moves forward across an open, rippling sea. The details of the masts, tackle, and hull are rendered with a precision that makes the image both maritime-historical and graphically vivid. The broad horizon and the ship’s clear silhouette give the composition a calm yet powerful presence on the wall.
Artist: Niels Truslew (1762–1827) | Created: 1805.
