The story behind the motif

In A Late Autumn Day in Dyrehaven. Sunshine from 1886, Theodor Philipsen brings autumn light across Jægersborg Dyrehave north of Copenhagen. The road runs at a right angle through the landscape and is echoed by the small road sign, an unusual composition that gives the painting both rhythm and direction.

Philipsen is among the Danish artists who brought Impressionism’s studies of color and light into Nordic painting. According to SMK, this was the first time he used the brush technique his friend Paul Gauguin had shown him: short, saturated brushstrokes and carefully balanced complementary colors. The trees, the road, and the clear autumn day are thus built up as a shimmer of color rather than a smooth surface. This makes the landscape feel alive even at close range.

Artist: Theodor Philipsen (1840–1920) | Created: 1886.
