The story behind the motif
In 1828, C.W. Eckersberg painted the Russian ship of the line Asow and a frigate at anchor on the roadstead off Helsingør. In the upright composition, Asow’s dark hull, masts, and finely wrought rigging rise against the bright waters of the Øresund, while the smaller frigate and small boats lend the image depth and movement.
Eckersberg had studied Russian ships of the line in Copenhagen, borrowed construction drawings from the Danish Navy, and carefully calculated the vessels’ relative placement. The painting is therefore not a depiction of a single observed moment off Helsingør, but a carefully composed marine scene. The clouds, light, and wind were of particular importance to him. The precise rigging set against the open, blue-grey sky gives the motif both monumentality and air.
