The story behind the motif

At Copenhagen’s Toldboden, Danish warships lie at anchor, while a Swedish shallop moves across the water in the foreground. This elongated gouache from 1795 captures the harbor entrance with tall masts, sails, and flags against a light, hazy sky. It is an image in which the city’s trade, seafaring, and military presence converge within the same view.

The work is attributed by Statens Museum for Kunst to Gustaf Boberg and is executed in gouache and drawing. The muted grey-green tones and broad horizon lend the ships a quiet yet monumental presence, while the shallop adds movement and human scale. A maritime Copenhagen motif from the late 18th century, with a visual language that allows the slender masts and open expanse of water to take their place on the wall.
