A Mislabelled Museum Journey
The original does not belong to The Met, as the image source states, but has been part of the National Gallery of Art’s collection in Washington since 1990. It was donated that year by Liselotte Millard for the museum’s 50th anniversary, after previously passing through, among others, the collections of Rudolf Leopold and Serge Sabarsky.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a line illustration by Egon Schiele. The motif is called Dancer (1913) and the original is at The MET Museum in New York.

Egon Schiele was an artist from Austria. He is counted together with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha as the most significant figurative artist in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.

The twisted body shapes and expressive lines that characterize Schiele's paintings show an early form of expressionism.

Illustrator: Egon Schiele | Created: 1913.
