The Name That Moved
When this plate was printed in L’Illustration horticole in 1875, the palm was called Cocos weddelliana – a name published only four years earlier. Botanists have since moved the species between several genera; today, its accepted name is Syagrus weddelliana. The label on the image is therefore a small taxonomic document of its time.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration of the palm plant Cocos Weddelliana, known for its elongated leaves and as a popular plant in botanical gardens during the late 19th century.

 The illustration was produced by Lois Godard (1887), Paul de Longpré (1911) and Alfred Riocreux (1912). It was published in the French journal L'Illustration Horticole: Revue Mensuelle des Serres et des Jardins, a publication from the year 1875 that focused on botanical and horticultural subjects.
