A Book That Lived On
The image was taken from an 1892 edition of Dictionnaire universel d’histoire naturelle – sixteen years after the work’s editor, Charles d’Orbigny, had died. The reference work had first been published in 16 volumes during the 1840s, as an ambitious attempt to gather nature’s species between two covers.
