In eighteenth-century Karlskrona, town plans were also working tools for the navy. The National Archives catalogues a map from 1786 of the city and shipyard, drawn at a scale of 1:3,600 and marked with depth figures – information that made the waters around the naval base measurable, not merely depicted.

The story behind the motif
A historical drawing with the title "Charter over Carlscrona" which depicts the city of Karlskrona, located on Sweden's south-eastern coast. The city was founded in the 17th century as a strategic naval base and was designed to become a center for the Swedish navy. The map was most likely drawn during the 18th century and is color-coded with different shades of blue, red and yellow to mark land masses, islands and seas.

In the center of the map is Charlemagne highlighted, and it also shows its proximity to other islands and waterways. The map is drawn with fine lines and text, giving a sense of how carefully and detailed such maps were designed at the time. It is an example of how sea routes and geographic areas were documented for navigation and trade during that period.
