The story behind the motif
Poster featuring the stunning painting Boulevard des Italiens, Morning, Sunlight by Camille Pissarro from 1897.
Through the picture, we look down on a wide, busy, tree-lined avenue filled with buildings, people and horses pulling carriages. The scene of the painting takes place on Boulevard des Italiens, which is a boulevard in Paris. The street is named after the Théâtre-Italien .
Pissarro was a French impressionist painter. He was born on Saint Thomas where his father, a wealthy Dutch-Jewish businessman of Spanish descent, had moved. Already at the age of twelve, he came to Paris to study. When he returned to Saint Thomas, he was supposed to work in the family business, but under the influence of the Danish artist Anton Melbye, he decided to focus on art. He accompanied Melbye to Venezuela and in 1855 he moved to Paris.
Artist: Camille Pissarro | Created: 1897.
