A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Bohuslän from the 19th century.
The coat of arms shows a red castle with three towers on a golden background, flanked by a sword and a lion. The red castle symbolizes Bohu's fortress, which played a central role in the region's defense and history as part of Norway until the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, when Bohuslän became Swedish. The sword and the lion represent strength and protection, while the look of the castle reflects Bohuslän's strategic importance as a borderland.
Bohuslän is located on Sweden's west coast and is known for its coastline with hundreds of islands and archipelagos. The largest towns are Uddevalla, Lysekil and Strömstad, all of which are important for the region's marine history. Fishing has long been a central part of Bohuslän's economy and culture, and the landscape is still known for its production of herring.
The text above the coat of arms reads: Bohusläns Vapen. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
