From poster to postage stamp
When Cappiello created Spiritello in 1921, Campari got its first recurring advertising character. The image became so strongly associated with the brand that Italy’s postal service issued a commemorative stamp in 2020 featuring a reinterpretation of the poster, 99 years after the original.

The story behind the motif

Vintage poster with a famous advertisement for Bitter Campari from the year 1921 by Leonetto Cappiello.

Bitter Campari is an Italian liqueur known for its bitter taste and deep red color. It was invented in the 1860s by Gaspare Campari and has since developed into one of the world's most famous and popular bitter liqueurs. Bitter Campari is still produced according to the original recipe and is often used as an ingredient in classic cocktails such as the Negroni and Americano.

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian poster artist who lived from 1875 to 1942. He was one of the most influential advertising artists of his time and is known for revolutionizing poster art by using large and colorful images that grabbed people's attention. Cappiello created many iconic posters for companies such as Coca-Cola, Campari and Dubonnet, and his work has had a major impact on the advertising industry. He is considered one of the foremost pioneers of modern poster art.
