After Elizabeth Gould
The source for the plate was painted in 1850 by Henry Constantine Richter, who took over the work on John Gould’s great bird books after Elizabeth Gould’s death in 1841. The finished hand-coloured lithograph was later published in the supplement to *The Birds of Australia*, issued from 1851 to 1869.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage poster of a Cassowary from the 19th century. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Casuarius australis - Latin for the name of the species .

A cassowary is a bird descended from the dinosaur species Velociraptor. It is the world's second largest bird after the ostrich, can run at up to 50 km/h, jump up to 1.5 meters and swims well. The cassowary can live up to 50 years old and lives deep in the forest. They have very strong legs with long, curved claws. If disturbed, they can kick and injure the attacker very seriously. The cassowary is described as the world's most dangerous bird because of the accidents that have happened to humans, but are actually very calm and shy.

Artist: Elizabeth Gould | Created: 19th century.
