A Book in Ten Parts
Fries’s mushroom work was first published in parts, rather than as a completed book. The first issue appeared in 1861, while the collected edition with 93 plates was not completed until 1867–68 – a slow book project at a time when colour printing was both expensive and technically demanding.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring a beautiful, classic illustration from the book Sweden's Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms which was published in series between the years 1860-1866 by Elias Fries.

In the picture we see, among other things, chanterelle, black trumpet mushroom and giant smoke mushroom; all edible mushrooms that are popular in the kitchen. 

Elias Fries (1794-1878) was a Swedish botanist and mycologist and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences.
