Impressionist artists often created homages to the modern side of Paris where their paintings often depicted the grand boulevards, elegant new buildings and modern constructions such as iron bridges and railway tracks. 

Monet's choice of subjects when it comes to Arrival of the Normandy Train was a particularly fitting choice as the terminal linking Paris and Normandy - a place where Monet's ability to paint landscapes had been honed for many years.

Monet painted a total of 12 paintings of the train station and for this particular subject chose to focus on the station's glass and metal construction, the train with its rising column of steam, and the combination of natural and artificial light. 

The series of paintings from the train station that Monet would create was his last attempt to paint urban environments - henceforth he would basically only paint landscape motifs.

Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris and, together with Auguste Renoir, was one of the main pioneers of Impressionism and was also the one who gave the movement its name through his painting Impression. Sunrise from 1872.

Monet was close friends with another famous artist Eduardo Manet who, among other things, painted A Parisian Lady. With the help of Manet, Monet, in 1871, got hold of a residence in a suburb of Paris named Argenteuil. After the move, Monet began one of the most productive phases of his career, creating many of his most famous works.
