An Evening on Rue Bergère
On 19 June 1895, the poster was registered for a production at Alcazar d’Été, one of Paris’s café-concerts. It was made for the performer Lidia and printed by Chaix on Rue Bergère—the same printing house that housed Chéret’s studios. The poster was therefore literally the evening’s street advertising in Belle Époque Paris.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Alcazar d'Ete created in 1895 by the French artist Jules Chéret (1836-1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.
The poster "Lidia" shows a woman wearing a white dress adorned with red roses. Her hair is red and she wears a large, light green hat with a matching ribbon. The title "ALCAZAR D'ÉTÉ" is prominently placed at the top in bold red letters, while "LIDIA" appears at the bottom in equally large red letters.
A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
