The story behind the motif
P.S. Krøyer’s *Evening Mood from Skagen* from 1893 is a small oil painting on wood, now in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. The motif is topographically tied to Skagen in Jutland and bears a title that sets the tone from the outset: the light of evening is the true protagonist.
Above the low, dark ground, the sky stretches out in muted shades of grey, green, and pink. The clouds and the wide horizon allow the landscape to emerge through restrained means, while the fields of colour create a quiet movement across the image. It is a concentrated coastal atmosphere in which Krøyer lets the light, the weather, and the earthy tones hold the composition together. In an interior, the broad pictorial surface works beautifully as an understated contrast to more detailed motifs.
