One of Beskow’s Last
ABC-resan appeared in 1945, late in Elsa Beskow’s long career as a picture-book creator. Her bibliography contains only a few new titles after it—including Petters och Lottas jul, Herr Peter and Röda bussen och gröna bilen—before her death in 1953. The alphabet’s P and Q thus belong to the final chapter of a career spanning more than fifty years.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a nostalgic illustration from the book The ABC journey, written by Elsa Beskow and published in 1945.

The book was used to teach children the alphabet in an entertaining and educational way, as each letter is linked to a picture and a short rhyme. In this image, the letters P & Q are presented, with an illustration of a pear and jumping children because the letter Q is often "skipped".

Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her imaginative children's books that often contain educational elements. In her book "ABC-resan" you can follow Anna and Bo as they discover the world and at the same time work their way through the alphabet.
