Poster of The Lady with the Veil from 1768 by Alexander Roslin. The Lady with the Veil is one of the National Museum's best-loved paintings and the Swedish artist Alexander Roslin was one of the 18th century's most used portrait painters.
The woman in the portrait looks lovingly and secretly at the artist, partially hidden by a black silk veil. No wonder - the woman in the picture is Alexander Roslin's love of life and wife Suzanne Roslin, who was herself a talented French artist. In the picture she is holding a fan. Fans were widely used by women in the 18th century. They were used to appear secretive and feminine at social events but also to send secret messages to the onlooker. Opening, closing and swinging his fan in different ways meant different things. In the picture, Suzanne has folded her fan and is stroking it against her cheek, which is thought to mean I love you .
As a viewer, it is easy to be seduced and charmed by the charismatic and beautiful woman. Suzanne died tragically aged only 38. Roslin came to paint five different portraits of his beautiful wife over the years - all equally deeply loving.
